Matt Burbach is the Global Marketing Director for Mountain Hardwear. In his time with the brand, he has been instrumental in starting the Open Aperture program, which is currently in its third year. His career has been rooted in the climbing and outdoor industry through media channels and retail and brand marketing. He’s an avid boulderer, sport climber, climbing book author, photographer, and former climbing coach and instructor.
“My identity has always been as a climber. But only more recently have I realized the importance of being a climber of color. I’m aware of the opportunities I’ve had in my life-long pursuit of an activity that has provided so much joy and value to me. I’d love to do the same for others. My hope is we can create a safe, inclusive space and opportunities for new and experienced climbers to feel like they belong.”
By providing more visibility and representation within the BIPOC community, he hopes that it will inspire, motivate, and make personal connections to the outdoors and climbing, as it did for him.
